How do matchmakers choose a first-date spot?
When I set up an introduction, I pick the place before I tell either person who they are meeting. Four rules decide it.
- Halfway for both. Neither person should travel more than about 20 minutes. If one of you crosses two boroughs, you arrive tired and already annoyed.
- You can hear each other. A first date is a conversation. Skip loud rooms, DJs and anywhere you have to shout your name.
- A drink or a coffee, not a three-course dinner. One drink lasts an hour and can stretch to three. A tasting menu traps you both for two hours, whatever happens.
- An easy "let's keep going" option nearby. A walk, a park or a second bar around the corner lets a good date continue without anyone having to suggest dinner.
There is one counterpoint. A 2017 Hinge survey of 8,000 New York members found that first dates at a movie or show led to a second date 79% of the time, against 42% for bars (Time Out New York). A shared activity followed by a drink works, so several picks below pair the two. For what to talk about once you sit down, see what to ask on a first date.
First date spots in Midtown
Midtown is the compromise neighborhood. If one of you lives in Brooklyn and the other on the Upper West Side, meet here: almost every subway line runs through it.
The Campbell

Frequently asked questions
Where should a first date be in NYC?
Somewhere halfway for both of you, quiet enough to talk and easy to leave after an hour. Grand Central's The Campbell, Bar Pisellino in the West Village and the High Line followed by a drink all fit. Avoid loud bars and long dinners.
Is dinner a good first date?
Usually not. Dinner commits you both to about two hours before you know whether you click. A drink or a coffee lasts an hour, and if it goes well you can move on to dinner nearby, as at Vinegar Hill House or Sweet Afton.
How long should a first date last?
Plan for about an hour and leave room for more. One drink or one coffee is a natural end point. If the conversation is flowing, a walk or a second bar nearby turns an hour into three without either of you having to suggest it.
