Dating Over 50: Honest Advice and Where to Meet People in NYC

By Vadim Litvak · Last updated:

Dating over 50 works best with a clear goal, one or two good channels and a sharp eye for scams. Only 20% of Americans 50+ have ever used online dating (SSRS, 2026), so classes, clubs and introductions still matter. In New York City, 46% of adults over 50 are unmarried (ACS 2020–2024).

This guide covers what has changed, what the numbers say about dating in New York after 50, where people your age actually meet, and how to keep money and safety out of the romance. It is written from a matchmaker's chair: plain advice, real places, sourced figures.

What is different about dating after 50?

The biggest difference is that people want different things, and saying which one you want saves time. In AARP's 2026 survey of online daters aged 50 and older, 38% were looking for a long-term partner and 39% for casual dating and meeting people. Neither answer is wrong; mixing them up is what hurts.

More people are open to it than you might think. In Match's Singles in America 2026 study of about 5,000 US singles, 55% of single Boomers and 69% of single Gen X said they were interested in or open to dating.

More people are single at this age, too. The divorce rate among people 50 and older was 10.3 per 1,000 married women in 2023, up from 3.9 in 1990 (Pew Research Center). Widowhood is the other route: in New York City, 284,529 women and 68,888 men aged 50+ are widowed (ACS 2020–2024).

The shape of commitment is changing as well. Among newlyweds aged 65 and older, 13.7% live apart from their spouse (NCFMR, 2023 data). Living apart together is one more option on the table.

When someone over 50 sits down with me, my first questions are about the life they already have: what a good week looks like, who is in it, and what a partner would add rather than fix. The answer shapes everything after it, from where to look to how fast to go.

Dating over 50 in New York: the numbers

Here is the pool, counted by the US Census Bureau. "Unmarried" means never married, divorced or widowed; separated people are not counted.

By borough, for ages 55 to 64, Manhattan has 85.0 unmarried men per 100 unmarried women, Staten Island 73.3, Queens 70.4, Brooklyn 67.3 and the Bronx 66.4.

What it means, plainly: for women, the pool of unmarried men narrows with each decade. For men, there are more unmarried women than men at every age over 50. Neither fact changes who is right for you; it changes how wide you should look. For more, see our full NYC singles statistics.

Where do people over 50 meet in NYC?

Most Americans over 50 have never used a dating app, so most of them are meeting people somewhere else. The best places are the ones where you see the same faces every week: a walking group, a class, a dance social, a volunteer shift.

The two walking options and the classes are the easiest start: they are cheap or free, they meet every week, and nobody is there to be judged. A dance social takes more nerve but gives you a reason to talk to a dozen people in an evening. Volunteering puts you next to people who share your values, which is a better filter than any app.

Meetup groups are free to join: you join a group, then reply "going" to the events it posts. Member counts tell you how big a group is, not how active it is, so check how often it holds events before you sign up.

Should you use dating apps after 50?

Use one if it fits your goal, but know that you will be in a minority. Only 20% of Americans 50+ have ever used online dating, and 2% use it now (SSRS, January 2026). Pew's 2022 survey found that 6% of partnered adults over 50 met their partner online.

The people your age who do use apps are mostly on three. Among online daters 50+, 36% have used Plenty of Fish, 33% Match and 28% Facebook Dating (SSRS, 2026). Pew found that half of online daters 50+ had used Match, against 24% of those under 50, while 11% had used Tinder, against 59% of younger users.

Results are mixed, not hopeless. In AARP's 2026 survey, 20% of people 50+ looking for something long-term were in a serious relationship of three months or more with someone they met on the platform, and 50% had not found anyone yet. More than half, 52%, had paid for upgrades.

Three sites built for people over 50, with US App Store prices: OurTime, 1 month of Premium for $39.99; SilverSingles, 1 month for $18.99; SeniorMatch, 1 month for $33.99. Prices checked October 2026. For the full table with free versions and who each suits, see our best dating sites for over 50.

How to start dating again after 50: 7 steps

A small group walking along a riverside park path
  1. Decide what you want. A partner, companionship or simply company are different searches; AARP's 2026 survey split almost evenly between long-term (38%) and casual dating and meeting people (39%).
  2. Choose two channels. Pick one in person from the table above and one online or through introductions, since only 20% of people your age have ever used an app.
  3. Write a profile that says what you want. Use recent photos and plain words about your goal; here is how to write a dating profile.
  4. Meet within a week or two, in public, and tell a friend where you are going. The FTC's romance-scam advice warns about anyone who keeps finding reasons not to meet; for venues, see first date ideas in NYC.
  5. Keep money out of it. Never send money or gifts to someone you have not met in person, the FTC's first rule on romance scams.
  6. Give people a fair chance. In my view, two or three dates tell you far more than a first meeting, when both of you are nervous.
  7. Ask friends for introductions. 16% of engaged couples in The Knot's 2024 study met through friends, second only to apps.

Dating over 50 as a woman

The numbers are real, and it helps to know them. In New York City there are 71.8 unmarried men for every 100 unmarried women aged 55 to 64, and 41.0 at 65 and older (ACS 2020–2024). Manhattan has the highest ratio for 55 to 64, at 85.0.

Online dating has been harder for women at this age. Pew found that 57% of women 50+ who had used online dating described their experience as mostly negative, compared with 38% of men 50+. That gap is a reason to use your time carefully, not a reason to stop.

Practical rules help: meet in public, video-call before a first date, keep your home address and finances private, and leave when something feels off. If screening strangers is the part you dislike most, that is exactly the work a matchmaker takes on. Spend your energy on people who have already been checked, and on places from the table above where you can see how someone treats other people before you ever go out.

Dating over 50 as a man

In New York, there are more unmarried women than unmarried men in every age group over 50. That is not a reason to be passive: a good first impression still has to be earned.

What matters to women in online matching is often values, not lines. In SSRS's 2026 survey, 59% of women said similar family values were very important in a match, compared with 46% of men (all ages). Talk about family, how you spend your time and what you want next, and listen as much as you talk. Show up on time, plan the date, and follow up when you said you would.

Red flags when dating in your 50s (and how romance scams work)

The most important red flag after 50 is a request for money.

9% of adults 50+ have had an online romance turn into a request for money; 16% say they or someone they know lost money; 55% of victims never reported it (AARP, February 2026).

In 2025, people 60 and older filed 10,188 confidence and romance fraud complaints with the FBI and lost $584,032,745. People aged 50 to 59 lost $131,385,454 (FBI IC3 2025 report).

47% of online daters 50+ have met someone they suspected was a scammer (Pew Research Center).

Watch for these signs, drawn from the FTC's, AARP's and the New York Attorney General's advice:

  • They ask for money, gift cards, crypto or an "investment," however the story is framed.
  • They can never meet in person and always have a reason to skip a video call.
  • They want to move off the dating app to WhatsApp or Telegram quickly.
  • They describe a job overseas or a military posting, followed by a crisis.
  • They ask you to keep the relationship secret from family and friends.

Not every red flag is a scam. Pressure to move faster than you want, or disrespect for a boundary you have stated, also tells you what you need to know. It helps to write down your relationship non-negotiables before you start.

Where to report: ReportFraud.ftc.gov, IC3.gov and the app itself. AARP's Fraud Watch helpline is 877-908-3360, and the New York Attorney General's line is 1-800-771-7755.

Dating over 60

After 65, most New York women are unmarried: 62.9%, compared with 35.3% of men. That works out to 41 unmarried men for every 100 unmarried women (ACS 2020–2024).

The easiest low-key starting points are free. NYC Aging's Older Adult Centers, open to anyone 60 and older, run in all five boroughs, and NYRR Striders walks every weekday morning. Commitment can take new shapes too: 10.3% of newlyweds aged 55 to 64 and 13.7% of those 65 and older live apart from their spouse (NCFMR).

When does a matchmaker make sense after 50?

A matchmaker makes sense if you have little time, want every person screened before you meet, care about privacy, or want someone at a similar stage of life. It is also the most direct answer to the scam problem: you meet people a professional has already spoken to.

It costs more than any app. See what matchmakers in NYC charge, and read how our matchmaking works. Not sure it is for you? Take the 2-minute quiz, or talk to a New York matchmaker.

Is it normal to be single at 50 in NYC?

Yes. 46% of New Yorkers aged 50 and over are unmarried: never married, divorced or widowed (ACS 2020–2024). That is 1,358,699 people, a higher share than the US figure of 38.7%.

What is the 37% rule in dating?

A rule from the maths "secretary problem": look at the first 37% of options without choosing, then pick the next one better than all before. It assumes you know how many options you will have, which dating never does.
