How to Become a Matchmaker in New York

No license or certificate is required to work as a matchmaker in New York. The usual routes are joining a firm, where many matchmaker roles carry sales targets, taking a course such as the Global Love Institute's $4,500 certification, or starting your own practice under New York's dating-service law, GBL § 394-c.
I run Matchmaker New York, and this guide draws on my own work as a matchmaker. You can read more about Vadim Litvak's background. This guide covers every route I know of, with real pay data, course prices and the New York rules for starting a practice, so you can choose yours.
What does a matchmaker do day to day?
The core of the job is people work: intake interviews with clients, recruiting and screening candidates, arranging introductions, feedback calls after every date, and coaching. Our guide to what a matchmaker does day to day walks through each step from the client's side.

The part most newcomers do not expect is sales. Job posts make it plain. It's Just Lunch's 2023 matchmaker role asked for 70–80 sales calls a day and two years of sales experience. Tawkify measures its matchmakers on feedback, match and quality scores, and sets match goals. When We First's VIP Matchmaker role includes upgrading and renewing memberships.
How much do matchmakers make?
In New York City, Glassdoor's self-reported median for "matchmaker" is $92,708 a year, from 53 salaries (October 2026). Pay ranges that firms have posted run from about $60,000 to $120,000, usually with commission on top of the base.
| Source | Figure | Sample / role | Date |
|---|---|---|---|
| Glassdoor, New York City | Median $92,708; middle half $71,431–$120,936 | 53 self-reported salaries, "Matchmaker" title | October 2026 |
| Glassdoor, United States | Median $82,430; middle half $62,878–$108,700 | 180 self-reported salaries | October 2026 |
| Salary.com, New York, NY | Average $58,287; middle half $48,201–$63,916 | Sample size not published | Oct. 1, 2026 |
| Salary.com, United States | Average $50,623; middle half $41,864–$55,512 | Sample size not published | Oct. 1, 2026 |
| Tawkify job post | $24.04 an hour base plus incentive; on-target earnings $60,000 a year | Signature Matchmaker, remote | Posted Oct. 16, 2026 |
| When We First job post | $60,000–$100,000+ total compensation | VIP Matchmaker, remote | Date not shown |
| It's Just Lunch job post | $70,000–$120,000 first-year base plus commission and bonus | Matchmaker, Washington DC (also Denver, Minneapolis) | June 2, 2023 |
| CNBC on Three Day Rule | $80,000–$110,000 salary plus commission | Matchmaker, New York City | February 2019 |
Read these figures with two cautions. Glassdoor's "matchmaker" title is not limited to dating firms, and its higher "Professional Matchmaker" median of $144,593 rests on only 19 salaries. There is also no government occupation for matchmakers: O*NET returns "No occupations matched your search." On October 30, 2026, LinkedIn and Glassdoor listed no New York City openings for dating matchmakers.
Since November 1, 2022, New York City has required employers to include a good-faith pay range in all job ads, so ask for the range if a posting leaves it out. And do not confuse pay with fees: what clients pay matchmakers in NYC is a different, much larger number.
Do you need a certification to be a matchmaker?
No. We found no license or certificate requirement for matchmakers in New York. General Business Law § 394-c regulates dating-service contracts, not the people who sell them. The statute lets New York City license dating services, but we found no such license in place.
A course can still teach you the craft and give clients a credential to look at. These are the programs with published prices, listed without ranking:

How do you get hired at a matchmaking firm?
Firms hire for people skills and sales results. Recent job posts ask for:
- Tawkify: emotional intelligence and results against KPIs.
- When We First: five or more years of matchmaking, and recruiting at events.
- It's Just Lunch: two or more years of sales, high-volume calling and comfort with commission.
- LUMA: two or more years at a matchmaking firm, and work on evenings and weekends.
Several of these roles are remote. To understand how the big firms work before you apply, read our reviews. Here is what their careers pages offered on October 30, 2026:
| Firm | What the careers page offers |
|---|---|
| LUMA | Lists the roles it recruits for: matchmakers, assistants, appointment setters and recruiters; all roles virtual (careers page) |
| Three Day Rule | Send a résumé by email (careers page) |
| The Matchmaking Company | Application form (careers page) |
| Selective Search | No roles listed (careers page) |
| It's Just Lunch | No roles listed (careers page) |
If you have no matchmaking experience, start with an entry role. Assistant, recruiter and appointment-setter jobs, which LUMA lists, are the usual first step at firms that hire for them.
How do you start your own matchmaking practice in New York?
Register the business
As a sole proprietor, file an assumed name certificate (a DBA) with your county clerk. NYC311 lists the fee as $100 in the Bronx, Manhattan and Queens and $120 in Brooklyn and Staten Island. To form an LLC instead, file Articles of Organization with the Department of State for $200, publish a notice in two newspapers for six consecutive weeks, and file the $50 Certificate of Publication within 120 days.
Write a contract that follows GBL § 394-c
New York's dating-service law sets what your contract must contain. The main rules:
- give the client a fully completed copy of the written contract when it is signed;
- print the three-day cancellation notice in 10-point bold type, with a Notice of Cancellation form;
- state a monthly number of referrals in contracts over $25;
- keep the cash price to $1,000 and the term to two years, with an exception for online services with terms of a year or less;
- state the travel distance for referrals and your relocation policy;
- include the Dating Service Consumer Bill of Rights;
- return or delete client data at the end, and never require add-on purchases.
The Attorney General can seek penalties of up to $1,000 per violation, and clients can sue for actual damages or $50. In Doe v. Great Expectations (2005), a New York City court held that a service promising no monthly number of referrals "may charge no more than twenty-five dollars." Have a New York lawyer review your contract. Here is how our own service is set up.
Build your pool
A matchmaker is only as good as the people they can introduce. Recruiting is a core skill; the Global Love Institute even includes a separate Recruiter Certification in its course. Many firms keep a free database of singles who wait to be matched with paying clients, as our guide to how matchmaking works explains.
Insurance and tools
Plan for general and professional liability cover. One affiliate business guide, howtostartanllc.com, puts general liability for dating services at $400–$700 a year for $1 million of cover. Matchmaking CRMs exist too: NYCity Matchmaking's join form, for example, runs on SmartMatchApp.
Professional networks
The Global Love Institute runs a network and directory for the matchmakers it certifies. The Matchmakers Alliance is a not-for-profit, invitation-only group: membership needs a member's recommendation, approval and an NDA. IAP Career College runs the IAPO membership listed above.
What skills does a matchmaker need?
- Listening and interviewing. The intake is where the search is won or lost; the best matchmakers hear what a client needs, not only what they say they want.
- Emotional intelligence. Tawkify names it in its job post. You deliver hard feedback after dates, kindly.
- Recruiting. Finding people outside your database is what separates a matchmaker from a dating app.
- Discretion. Clients share their finances, families and histories. None of it leaves the room.
- Sales and follow-up. Whether you join a firm or start your own, you will sell memberships and keep clients informed.

Is dating coaching a related path?
Many matchmakers also coach, and some coaches move into matchmaking. Dating coaching is unlicensed too; the International Coaching Federation (ICF) is the main credential. See how dating coaching works in New York.
