How to Find a Wife: A Matchmaker's Guide for Men Who Want to Marry
To find a wife, get clear on what you want in a marriage, then meet women where marriage is on the table: introductions from friends, apps where you say you want marriage, faith or hobby groups that meet weekly, and a matchmaker for screened introductions. Say early that you want to marry, and choose character over a checklist.

This guide is for men who want to marry and are tired of dating that goes nowhere. It covers how couples actually meet today, a three-step plan, what "wife material" really means, and when a matchmaker is worth paying for.
How do most men meet their wife?
Since about 2013, meeting online has been the most common way heterosexual couples in the US meet; in 2017, 39% met online and 20% through friends (Stanford, PNAS 2019). Source: Rosenfeld, Thomas and Hausen, 2019. The full picture:
| How couples met | 1995 | 2017 |
|---|---|---|
| Online | 2% | 39% |
| Bar or restaurant | 19% | 27% |
| Through friends | 33% | 20% |
| Through or as coworkers | 19% | 11% |
| Through family | 15% | 7% |
| Primary or secondary school | 10% | 5% |
| College | 9% | 4% |
| Neighbors | 8% | 3% |
| Church | 7% | 4% |

Two notes on reading the table. First, the categories overlap, so the columns do not add up to 100%: a couple can count as "online" and "bar or restaurant" at once. Second, the rise of bars and restaurants after 2010 comes from couples who met online and had their first date there, as the authors explain.
Pew Research Center gives a similar picture from another angle. One in ten partnered U.S. adults met their partner on a dating site or app, and one in five of those under 30. Source: Pew, February 2023.
Our takeaway as matchmakers: introductions through friends have dropped from a third of couples to a fifth. They still happen, but now you have to ask for them, and that is the gap a matchmaker fills. Online is the biggest single door, so use it, but not alone.
Step 1: Be ready for marriage, and know what you want
Readiness is practical. You have time in your week to date. Your work and housing are stable enough to plan a shared life. You are over your last relationship, not still comparing every woman to her.
Then sort what you want into non-negotiables and preferences. Non-negotiables are the few things a marriage cannot work without: children or not, the role of faith, which city you will live in, and how you handle money. Everything else is a preference. Our guide to relationship non-negotiables helps you sort the two.

Step 2: Where to meet women who want to marry
You need more introductions to women who want the same future, not simply more dates. These are the channels that produce them.
Ask for introductions
Friends, family and coworkers know you, and they know single women you have never met. Most will help if you ask clearly. A text you can send:
"I'm ready to settle down and would love to meet someone who wants marriage too. If you know a woman you think I'd get along with, I'd be glad of an introduction."
Apps that show intentions
Choose apps that ask what you are looking for, and write "looking for marriage" in your profile. Women who want the same will notice; those who want something casual will pass. Apps are where many singles are: 30% of U.S. adults have used a dating site or app, including 53% of those under 30, in Pew's July 2022 survey. Compare options in our guides to dating apps for serious relationships, Hinge vs. Bumble and the best dating apps in NYC.
Faith communities
Church young-adult groups and synagogue, mosque or temple events bring together people who often share your views on family. If you want a Christian wife, join the young-adult or singles group of a church you would attend anyway, and take part rather than just attending. For Jewish singles, see our guide to Jewish matchmakers in NYC.
Co-ed groups that meet every week
Sports leagues, classes and volunteering work because of repeated contact. You see the same women week after week, conversation comes easily, and you learn how someone treats people before you ask her out.
Professional and alumni circles
Alumni events and professional associations put you among people with similar routines and goals. Our guide to dating sites for professionals covers the online side.
In New York
The city offers more ways to meet than anywhere, and more distractions. Our guide to how to meet someone in NYC lists the places that work here.
Step 3: Say you want marriage, early
Many men hide that they want to marry, afraid it sounds like pressure. Said simply, it sounds like clarity. Two lines that work on a first to third date:

- "I'm dating because I'd like to get married in the next few years. What are you looking for?"
- "I'm not in a rush, but I'm not dating casually either. I'd like to build a family at some point."
By about the third month, talk through the big four: children, where to live, faith and money. These are not tests to pass; they show whether your two plans can become one. Her answers count. So does what she does next: whether she makes plans with you, brings you into her life and talks about the future on her own.
What does "wife material" mean? 7 signs that matter
"Wife material" means a woman you could build a marriage with: someone whose character, goals and way of handling conflict fit yours. It is about how she treats people and plans a life, not about looks or housework.
Seven signs she is wife material:
- She is consistent: her words and actions match.
- She is kind under stress, including to waiters and strangers.
- She wants the same family plan you do.
- She argues fairly and repairs after a disagreement.
- Her money values fit yours.
- She brings you into her life and enjoys yours.
- She is choosing you too.
The label is sometimes used unfairly, to judge women on looks or on old ideas of their role. The same seven signs apply to you: she is asking whether you are husband material. For more, read green flags in a relationship.
Finding a wife after 30, 35 or 40
Men marry later than they used to. The median age at first marriage for U.S. men was 30.8 in 2025, according to Census Current Population Survey data. Source: BGSU NCFMR, 2026.
Later marriages are common. Of Americans who entered a first marriage in 2024, 23% were 35 or older, and 12% were 40 or older. Source: BGSU NCFMR, ACS 2024. In 2021, 25% of 40-year-olds had never married. Source: Pew, June 2023.
New York has a large pool at every age. In 2024 the city had about 1.64 million never-married women and 1.58 million never-married men aged 15 and older. Source: ACS 2024 via Census Reporter. Age detail is in our NYC singles statistics.
Does a large age gap work? It depends on the two people and their plans, so there is no general verdict; our age gap calculator gives the exact gap and checks the half-your-age-plus-seven rule.

Mistakes men make when looking for a wife
Apps as the only channel. Online is the biggest door, but most couples still meet another way. Men who only swipe see a thin slice of the women who want marriage.
A checklist of looks. Filtering by appearance first rules out women before you learn whether they want the same life.
Hiding that he wants marriage. Saying it late wastes months with women who want something else, and hides you from women looking for exactly that.
Hoping she changes her mind about children. When a woman says she does not want children and you do, believe her. Neither of you should have to give up that answer.
Never asking for an introduction. Friends rarely set you up unless you ask. One clear message to the right friend can open more doors than a month of swiping, and the woman arrives already vouched for.
When a matchmaker helps
When the goal is marriage, a matchmaker screens women for marriage intent before your first date, and gives you feedback after each one. Research adds another part of the job: a 2024 study of a professional matchmaking company found that part of a matchmaker's work is helping clients discover, and sometimes reassess, what they want in a partner. Source: Sharabi, Journal of Social and Personal Relationships, 2024.
It suits men who are busy, clear that they want marriage and tired of apps. It does not suit a man who is not ready to commit time or money to the search. Read how matchmaking works, what a matchmaker costs in NYC, and our honest answer to are matchmakers worth it.
A note from Vadim Litvak: The men I find hardest to help are not the shy ones. They are the ones who will not say what they want. Tell me, and tell her, that you want to marry, and the rest of the search gets simpler.
