Selective Search Review (2026): Cost, How It Works and What Clients Say

By Vadim Litvak, NYC matchmaker · Last updated: October 30, 2026 · Prices checked October 2026

Selective Search is a Chicago-based luxury matchmaker founded by Barbie Adler in 2000. Paying clients retain a search the firm says typically costs $50,000–$500,000; singles can join its candidate pool free. It suits executives who want a recruiter-style search. Reviewers' main complaint: a large fee for few or poorly matched introductions.

How does Selective Search work?

Selective Search calls its six-step process Meet Your Future®. The structure reflects founder Barbie Adler’s executive recruiting background: define the search, screen possible matches, make introductions and use feedback to refine the work.

  1. Intake: discuss your relationship goals and what you want in a partner.
  2. Benchmarks For Success®: build a profile using more than 225 indicators.
  3. Screening: assess prospective candidates against the search criteria.
  4. Selection: the paying client approves each profile before an introduction.
  5. The meeting: the approved introduction moves to a meeting.
  6. Evaluation: separate debriefs collect feedback after the introduction.

The firm says clients begin receiving curated matches within weeks of onboarding. That is a statement about the process, rather than a published guarantee of a particular number of dates.

Inc.’s February 2020 profile described a 15-page questionnaire, a database of more than 250,000 people and 90 scouts. Those are historical figures from that report, rather than a current count of people available for your search.

Selective Search also actively recruits beyond its network. Recipients have posted accounts of LinkedIn recruiting messages. Before signing, ask how the team would source candidates for your location and criteria. Our guide explains how matchmaking works in general.

Does Selective Search have a free version?

The Selective Search candidate program is free to join and free to be matched through. Candidates are contacted when there is a two-way fit with a paying client. Candidates do not pay; clients do. Joining the pool does not retain a matchmaker to conduct your own search.

How much does Selective Search cost?

In 2026, Selective Search says a retained search “typically ranges from $50,000 to $500,000,” depending on scope and criteria. Complex searches “may be seven figures.” Pricing is custom. Selective Search offers a free consultation to discuss the proposed search scope.

The firm’s pricing page is the starting point for a current budget. Older press coverage and individual client accounts describe different years and purchases. The timeline keeps those distinctions visible.

Joining as a candidate is free under today’s published program. A November 2013 ConsumerAffairs reviewer who applied as a candidate reported later being asked for $5,000. That historical account describes her experience, rather than the current candidate policy.

What does the contract say about refunds and cancellation?

The FAQ describes a typical six- to 12-month contract with a finite number of introductions. The public pages do not state that number. A refund policy, cancellation policy and relationship guarantee are not published in the supplied sources. The client agreement is not public.

Selective Search’s website terms of use concern the website; they do not supply the missing search-contract terms. Ask for the proposed agreement before paying. Have the firm identify the introduction count, what counts as an introduction, the active search period and any pause or extension rules.

New York residents should also read New York General Business Law § 394-c, which addresses three-business-day cancellation, referrals per month and refunds after two months without referrals. How those provisions apply depends on the agreement and circumstances.

What do clients say about Selective Search?

The platforms show different pictures. BBB’s business grade and complaint count are separate from its customer review average. Trustpilot has no reviews to assess. ConsumerAffairs’ latest review in the supplied record is dated October 15, 2024, so its score is not a set of recent experiences.

The firm’s pricing page claims “5.0 stars on Consumer Affairs, and 4.9 stars on Google”; on October 30, 2026, those platforms showed 3.2 from 22 reviews and 4.6 from 51.

What are the recurring complaints?

The review sample covered all 22 ConsumerAffairs reviews, approximately 20 Yelp reviews, 10 visible BBB reviews and two visible Google reviews. Theme counts describe the reviews read, can overlap and are not percentages of all clients.

These are attributed experiences in ConsumerAffairs and Yelp, alongside recruiting accounts such as this Reddit post. The firm usually replies with a standard confidentiality message. In three cases, the firm says it has no record of the reviewer as a client.

What do positive reviewers report?

About 20 reviews praised attentive, named matchmakers, mostly on BBB and Yelp from 2018–2026. About nine reported a relationship or marriage, including two New York reviewers in 2023 and 2026. Positive accounts also described thorough vetting.

The January 2026 r/AskChicago thread had 92 comments. A prospect described an approximately $30,000 quote; a paying client later said the service did not justify the money. Women approached as free candidates described nondisclosure agreements. Forum comments add context but do not establish contract terms.

Does Selective Search work in New York?

Selective Search has an NYC city page but publishes no New York office address or named NYC matchmaker. The contact page lists Chicago. The site’s city coverage uses a shared template across 63 city pages, according to its supplied sitemap record.

Six of the 38 recommended reviews on the Chicago Yelp listing came from reviewers identified with Manhattan, Brooklyn or New York, with dates spanning 2023–2026. Those accounts include praise and criticism; their presence does not establish a separate New York office.

A New York search is run by the national team. Ask who your matchmaker will be, where prospective candidates live and how much travel your criteria imply. A city page establishes advertised coverage, while your written proposal should define the geography of your own search.

What are Selective Search’s pros and cons?

Who is Selective Search for, and who should skip it?

Selective Search fits high earners seeking a retained, recruiter-style national search who accept a five- or six-figure fee. The process may appeal if you want candidate screening, profile approval and separate feedback conversations.

If a written refund guarantee is essential, obtain acceptable terms before committing. Anyone with a budget under five figures should begin with what matchmakers in NYC charge. Women over 60 should ask directly about the ages of available candidates, given the older women’s accounts above.

Decide whether you want an active search or simply consideration for someone else’s search. That distinction matters more than joining a large database. Our guide to whether a matchmaker is worth it helps frame the purchase around the work you want done.

What are the alternatives in New York?

Compare the service model, search term and introduction commitment alongside price. These are alternatives to investigate, with no ranking implied.
