How does LUMA work?
LUMA separates paying Premium Search clients from free passive database members. A paying client receives a proactive search. A passive member waits to be considered when their profile fits a paying client; joining free does not promise introductions.
LUMA’s cost page describes five stages:
- Interview and personality assessment: discuss your preferences and relationship goals.
- Candidate search: LUMA says it considers at least 50 potential candidates from its database.
- LUMA Love Method coaching: preparation and guidance accompany the search.
- First-date introduction: introductions begin on a first-name basis.
- Post-date feedback: discuss the meeting with the matchmaker.
These are LUMA’s descriptions of its process, rather than promises of 50 dates. LUMA’s homepage uses three steps. LUMA’s NYC page calls its method five-step but lists six stages. Ask which process and deliverables your written proposal includes.
A June 2025 Racket report describes an offer to join free or buy a paid search starting at $12,000. Those are different roles in the same database. Our guide to how matchmakers find candidates explains the distinction.
LUMA’s terms of use say criminal background checks happen only when requested and purchased. An interview or personality assessment does not establish that a criminal check has been completed.
How much does LUMA cost?
LUMA’s site says paying-client searches range from $20,000 to $250,000 or more. LUMA’s homepage FAQ gives $0 to $250,000, counting free membership. LUMA describes a six-month search. Free membership does not buy an active search for you.
| Amount | What it bought | Year | Source | Type |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $20,000–$250,000+ | Customized full-service search | 2026 | LUMA cost page | Own published range |
| Free | Passive database profile; no guaranteed match | 2025 | Racket, June 11 | Press report |
| From $12,000 | Paid package starting quote | 2025 | Racket, June 11 | Press report |
| $10,000 | Three guaranteed introductions | 2024 | BBB, April 18 | Client report |
| About $10,000 | Six dates over six months | 2023 | BBB, December 11 | Client report |
| $12,000 | Package details not published | 2024 | BBB, March 8 | Client report |
| $20,000, described as discounted | Six introductions | 2026 | BBB, September 14 | Client report |
| $25,000 | Nine months | 2026 | Yelp, October 16 | Client report |
| About $1,000 per match | Reported per-match amount | 2025 | Yelp, October 7 | Client report |
Historical payments describe individual purchases, not packages available today. The $12,000 press quote predates the current published $20,000 floor. LUMA does not publish a tier list connecting each price to an introduction count, so get that scope in writing.
VIDA Select reports $20,000–$250,000+. Elite Connections reports $8,000–$50,000+. Photofeeler reports a starting figure around $2,800. All were checked October 2026; VIDA and Elite Connections sell competing matchmaking services. The last two figures conflict with LUMA’s own floor.

What do refunds, cancellation and the contract cover?
LUMA’s client contract is not public. In the BBB replies reviewed from 2023–2026, LUMA refused refunds and offered extensions in some cases. LUMA’s public terms also deny refunds after termination for breach; that clause does not disclose every client cancellation provision.
LUMA’s homepage describes one one-month hold for any reason. Its cost page mentions hold time without the same limit. Confirm your pause allowance, what counts as an introduction and what happens at the end of the search.
The public terms require individual AAA arbitration in Minneapolis, prohibit class actions and select Minnesota law. New York residents should also read New York General Business Law § 394-c, including its three-business-day cancellation provision, monthly referral requirements and refund provisions after two successive months without referrals. Request the proposed agreement before paying.
What do LUMA clients say?
LUMA matchmaking reviews vary sharply by platform and location. Read the review count alongside each average. The figures below are separate platform snapshots; Trustindex aggregates reviews and should not be treated as an additional independent client sample.

Across the reviewed sample of six BBB complaints, ten BBB reviews and material from Yelp, Trustpilot, ComplaintsBoard and Racket, recurring complaints were:
- Introductions to free members rather than paying clients, or a small local pool: six accounts.
- Matches outside stated criteria or location: five accounts.
- High price for few introductions: five accounts.
- Refund refused with an extension offered instead: four of six BBB complaints.
- Pressure to pay, including an offer to free members: two accounts.
These are reviewers’ accounts in the linked sources, not findings about every search. Themes can overlap within one account. Several positive experiences come from free members, while money complaints come from paying clients.
The ten latest BBB reviews in the sample were all 5-star. Praise focused on attentive named matchmakers, coaching and confidence. At least four Yelp reviews described good experiences as passive matches. The distinction matters when deciding whether a review describes the service you would buy.
The LUMA-named subreddit r/LUMAMatchmakingReview and profile u/LUMA-Matchmaking rank on page one; their operators could not be verified, and LUMA’s site does not link to either.
Does LUMA have a New York office?
LUMA’s NYC page lists 311 West 43rd St, New York, NY 10036, and (929) 333-5841. LUMA describes service across NYC, the Hamptons, Westchester and New Jersey. The NYC page does not name individual NYC matchmakers.

A separate Yelp listing at 112 W 34th St is marked closed. That listing has one review, dated June 28, 2023; it is a different address from LUMA’s current published office.
LUMA’s LGBTQ+ program names gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender clients. Compare LGBTQ+ matchmakers in NYC and ask who would handle your local search.
Is LUMA legit, and are there lawsuits?
LUMA is Cupid’s Cronies LLC dba LUMA Luxury Matchmaking, founded by April Davis in 2010 and headquartered in Minneapolis. BBB lists accreditation since September 19, 2012, an A+ grade and ten complaints in three years as of October 30, 2026. These records establish a business history, not a relationship guarantee.
No lawsuit was identified in BBB or the pages reviewed. A dedicated lawsuit search was not completed, so this is not a court-record clearance.
Why does LUMA also review other matchmakers?
LUMA’s blog sitemap includes reviews of 12 matchmaking firms, including It’s Just Lunch, Selective Search, Kelleher and Three Day Rule. Those reviews end with a membership invitation. Readers should know when the publisher also sells matchmaking.
We are a matchmaker too. Our own service stays outside the alternatives list, and our review method prioritizes each firm’s published prices over competing firms’ claims. Use the linked sources to assess the same evidence yourself.
What are LUMA’s pros and cons?
Pros: LUMA publishes a paid-search price range, offers free passive membership and includes coaching in its described process. LUMA lists an NYC office. BBB’s A+ grade and 4.7/5 average from 127 reviews provide a substantial positive review record.
Cons: the published entry price is $20,000. BBB replies show refund requests refused. Paying clients can meet free members, and criminal background checks cost extra when requested.
LUMA’s own pages also disagree: 85% versus 89% success, 15+ versus 25+ years of experience, and a network of 50,000 versus 1,000,000+ singles. These are LUMA’s claims across its NYC, New York, LGBTQ+ and membership pages, checked October 2026. They do not provide a consistent measure of your likely outcome.
Who is LUMA for, and who should skip it?
LUMA may suit professionals who want a guided six-month search with coaching and can commit $20,000 or more. LUMA’s New York page says most clients are 30–65. The useful fit question is whether the proposed search covers your geography, priorities and available time.
Skip a paid commitment if you require a refund clause that the written agreement does not provide. LUMA also falls short of expectations that every match must be a paying client or that criminal checks happen by default. Free passive membership is an option if you are comfortable waiting without a guaranteed introduction.
What alternatives should you compare?
- Selective Search review: a free candidate program alongside retained searches from $50,000.
- Kelleher International review: compare the retained-search scope and contract.
- Three Day Rule review: premium memberships start at $6,300.
- Tawkify review: per-match packages; three matches listed at $4,900 with a $4,400 offer.
Alternative prices were checked October 30, 2026; linked reviews explain sources and terms. Compare the best matchmakers in NYC using your intended purchase: a place in a database, introductions or an active search.
